Taking Autumn Leaves

A trip to a not-so-distant attraction can really make your day

Day Trip: (n) A vacation from your everyday life; a spur-of-the-moment adventure from which you’ll be back before dinnertime; a trip to a nearby sight that tourists appreciate more than locals.

Forget luggage. You won’t even need to pack a toothbrush to embark on these day trips to short-flung destinations in East Tennessee. Mild autumn days are perfect for rambling around scenic and historic locales like Jonesborough and Cumberland Gap. Or discovering the great outdoors: via car on the Cherohola Skyway; or with your hiking boots at Big South Fork National Recreation Area. And this weekend marks the best time to dig deep into the roots of mountain culture at the Museum of Appalachia’s Fall Homecoming celebration.

To compile our Fall Guide, Metro Pulse staffers ducked out of downtown for the day to explore not-so-distant getaways that engage the individual, the family, the group, in appreciating the variety of this region’s destinations.
