Meet Me in St. Louis
For those of us who may not have the means or the time to travel this holiday season, a trip to St. Louis is only a short drive away. The Oak Ridge Playhouse presents Meet Me in St. Louis, a heart-warming family classic set in 1904—when romance was merely a house down the block, the World’s Fair was making its way to town, and at any given moment family members could belt out a tune in perfect harmony. The script is adapted from the 1944 film screenplay starring Judy Garland. Mixed with comedy, romance and tunes such as “The Boy Next Door” and “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” this performance will take the audience back to a time when family values reigned in turn-of-the-century surburbia. The play tells the story of the Smiths, a six-member household faced with the threat of being uprooted and transported to New York for Mr. Smith’s job. The four Smith daughters also play vital roles as they face problems in love and family matters. Get out of town this holiday season. Meet me in St. Louis, Louis; meet me at the fair. (Melissa Elkins)
Meet Me in St. Louis • Nov. 25 – Dec. 5 • Oak Ridge Playhouse • $12-18

Kate Campbell
Most of us Southerners are damn proud of our upbringin’ no matter how much the cityfolk may jeer. Mississippi native Kate Campbell illustrates the quintessential Southern pride more eloquently than most through her nostalgic songs about the good ol’ country life. She paints a landscape of Southern imagery with simple lyrics like “livin’ on gospel and beans.” Plucky guitars and percussion accompany her shimmery voice as it lilts through the sometimes cheerful, sometimes dreary songs. Campbell has released seven albums and tours relentlessly throughout the US and the UK, but she still calls the South home, with her main base in Nashville. Even so, her rootsy folk style doesn’t fit the mold of typical “Nashville country” music; you won’t find her on the jukebox at many honky-tonk bars. Instead, Campbell’s demure Southern charm appeals to a more cultured crowd, as she’s appeared on various national radio programs such as NPR’s Morning Edition. Pretty impressive for a little ol’ country girl. (Molly Kincaid)

Th’ Legendary Shack*Shakers
It’s been a season of psycho-billy madness, what with the recent comings of the Rev. Horton Heat and the Cramps within the space of a month. Hope you caught your breath, because next up is Nashville’s Th’ Legendary Shack*Shakers, standard bearers for a whole new generation of punk/retro miscreants. Th’ Shakers are currently touring in support of their Yep Roc records debut Believe, an almost polished platter of hellbent rockabilly, punk attitude, Gospel flourishes, and even corrupt hints of ska. These guys put on a show that is equal parts revival-tent spectacle and rock’n’roll nirvana, and charismatic singer/harpist “Colonel” J.D. Wilkes is one of the most exciting frontmen in indie rock today. Recommended. (Mike Gibson)
Th’ Legendary Shack*Shakers • Saturday, Nov. 27, 9 p.m. • Pilot Light • $8
