Butterfly Boucher
Butterfly Boucher is a reminder of how good music can stand on its own without the cult of personality that so frequently gets slathered upon art like icing on a cardboard box. Not knowing a damn thing about Boucher, I got lured into her fan club through “Another White Dash,” a catchy and melodic single that defies its insipid radioland colleagues. Her debut disc Flutterby follows that lead with more hook-heavy pop-rock that isn’t grrrl-power posturing. Gritty guitar licks gnash alongside pretty violin stirrings. Much like Mindy Smith, who headlines tonight’s Autumn in the Square, Butterfly Boucher has spread her wings. No need for tons of Splenda on this artist—she’s splendid naturally. (Paige M. Travis)
Mindy Smith with Butterfly Boucher • Thursday, Sept. 30, 6-10 p.m. • Market Square • Free.

Allman Brothers Band
The high-end instrumental and rhythmic music performances of the present-day Allman Brothers Band are just as impressive, intelligent, inventive and passionate as those of the original 1969 line-up. Yes, you read it correctly; the ever-resilient ABB—through the severe ups and downs of more than three decades of industry growth, several band members’ deaths, break-ups and re-organizations—still hold tight to the title of being the single greatest hard Southern blues band to ever hit the big time. (Noah Bowman)
Allman Brothers • Monday, Oct. 4, 7:30 p.m. • Knoxville Civic Auditorium • $36, $46.

The Poison Arrows
Now Chicago-based, Justin Sinkovich is one of the least ballyhooed and most successful indie rockers who ever called Knoxville home. Most known hereabouts for his work with Thumbnail and the pivotal Atombombpocketknife, Sinkovich operates in the big leagues of the underground by spearheading a label (File 13) and operating a website (BetterPropaganda.com).
Returning for a rare Knoxville show, Sinkovich will appear as The Poison Arrows, a not-so-side project mixing elements of electronica, rock and noise, all within a (sort of) pop context.
The Poison Arrows’ upcoming debut, Trailer Park, is a career high for Sinkovich, and considering his excellent track record, that’s high praise. The obvious comparison would be Suicide, but that’s a little too easy, especially considering that Suicide’s Martin Rev actually remixed one of the tracks. Imagine any Basic Channel recording with some vocals added here and there, and you’ll have a (sorry) thumbnail sketch. Trust me, the Poison Arrows is quality stuff: timeless.
Sinkovich will be opening for The Narrator, an edgy Chicago combo that brings to mind Unwound. The evening is sure to be a loud, sweaty affair that you’ll regret missing forever, should you opt for the TV instead. Hipsters’ alert: wear tight black pants. (John Sewell)
The Poison Arrows with Narrator and Fist Full of Crows • Friday, Oct. 1, 9 p.m. • Pilot Light • $5
