The Weary Boys
In another time, the Weary Boys’ hillbilly twang might inspire an ornery crowd to fire six shooters into the ceiling. Furious, frenzied bluegrass picking and Americana rock collide with abandon into barroom ambience worthy of the most raucous of joints. The Wearys’ way is to employ a Telecaster—in lieu of a banjo or mandolin—in the lead spot, aggressively complementing the supporting fiddle, acoustic guitar, doghouse bass and snare drums. The Austin outfit recently thawed a crowd for Merle Haggard and held fast against the notorious Okie. Fill the square with howls and hollers, for an evening with the Weary Boys promises debauchery at its finest. (Clint Casey)
The Weary Boys • Thursday, August 26, 10 p.m. • Preservation Pub • Free.

P. Jones
Has a band ever chomped harder at the bit for success than P. Jones? As the four-piece Clarksville group covers an ever-widening circle of the Southeast, P. Jones sharpens its not-too-grungy, not-too-sweet pop rock within an inch of perfection, taking in more fans with every swath. The sleeve inside the band’s debut record, For Better or Worse, is filled with grainy, personal snapshots of friends, family and rock ‘n’ roll adventures. Not so precious is the disc’s music, led by Wes Newborn’s rumbling, scratchy vocals and driven by heavy-hitting guitar work from Newborn and Jerry Allen. The P stands for “project,” but the band already feels less like a work in progress and more like a full-fledged rock outfit. (Paige M. Travis)
P. Jones CD Release Party • Saturday, August 28, 10 p.m. • The Spot • Free.

For The Sake Of Beauty
This multi-media show is what art shows should be: a mixing of various mediums, with something for the eyes, ears and skin. Hao Chov and Audry Celeste Worster will show a variety of installation pieces, several involving human interaction. For instance, Worster’s “Ordinary Star” is made up of 633 kitchen sponges and thread; people are invited to take off their shoes and lay or sit on it.
Complementing the visual show will be music by Cortney Tidwell, a Nashville singer-songwriter. Her songs are haunting dirges, with echoes of classic country and jazz standards. Also performing at the show will be the incredible Gypsy Hands dancers. (Joe Tarr)
For the Sake of Beauty • Art by Hao Chov and Audry Celeste Worster, performances by Gypsy Hands and Cortney Tidwell • Aug. 28, 6 to 10 p.m. (art show continuing until Sept. 3) • Woodruff Building, Gay St. (5th floor, above the Downtown Grill & Brewery) • Free.
