So he recruits Passepartoute (Jackie Chan), a Chinese thief who protects the eccentric Fogg with his dazzling martial arts skills as they encounter different adventures and cultures of the 19th century per Jules Verne’s 1872 novel.

Van Diesel stars in this sequel to the sci-fi cult hit Pitch Black. The Day After Tomorrow (PG-13)
Tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, tidal waves, floods and the dawn of a new ice age are all part of the worst-case scenario if the green house effect and global warming were to reach catastrophic levels. Paleoclimatologist (where do you get a degree in that?) Adrian Hall travels to New York City, which is buried under snow thanks to the start of a new ice age, to look for his son Sam (Jake Gyllenhall). Hall’s the only one trying to get into the frozen Apple, which has most of its population fleeing for warmer latitudes. Written and directed by Roland Emmerich (Independence Day), this big budget disaster pic has all of special effects and cliched one-liners you’d expect.

Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (PG-13)
When the corporate fitness center Globo Gym comes to town, Peter LaFleur (Vince Vaughn) can’t make a mortgage payment on his local Average Joe Gym. Rather than go under, Peter enters a group of misfits into a high-risk Las Vegas competition of the ageless elementary gym class favorite: dodgeball. The object of their aggression is the cocky corporate-minded Globo Gym Purple Cobras and their captain White Goodman (Ben Stiller).

Fahrenheit 9/11 (R)
Oscar-winner Michael Moore’s latest documentary scrutinizes the Bush family’s ties to the Saudi royal family, Osama bin Laden, and the events of Sept. 11, 2001. But the controversy began before audiences ever saw the film. Disney refused to let Miramax release it, fearing reprisal from the Bush family. Then it won Best Picture at Cannes and found new distributors in IFC Films and Lion’s Gate, who are releasing the scathing documentary on more than 500 screens nationwide. Read the review on page 31.

Veterinarian and commitment-phobe Henry Roth (Adam Sandler) falls for Lucy Whitmore (Drew Barrymore), a lovely, creative free-spirit who actually makes him consider changing his bachelor ways. But after their first date, he finds out she suffers from short-term memory loss and doesn’t remember him at all. With a little help from his friends (Rob Schneider and a penguin), Henry attempts to jog her memory and win her heart.

In this CGI revision of the classic comic strip, Bill Murray voices Garfield, the large, lazy, lasagna-loving feline. When his owner, Jon Arbuckle (Breckin Meyer), gets a second pet—a dog named Odie—Garfield is no longer the center of attention in the household and thinks of ousting the dog out of jealousy. However, when Odie gets kidnapped one night, Garfield feels responsible and sets out to recover him.

**Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (PG)
After another dreary summer with his Muggle aunt and uncle, 13-year-old wizard Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) returns for his third year at Hogwarts. This year’s threat comes from Sirius Black (Gary Oldman), a mad wizard recently escaped from Azkaban prison and reportedly on his way to kill Harry. The young wizard and his friends Hermione and Ron deal with old rivalries, new teachers and the looming issues of adolescence. Alfonso Cuar�n (Y Tu Mam� También) directs Steve Kloves’ screenplay, based on the tremendously successful novels by J.K. Rowling.

The multi-million dollar industry known as Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen star as twin sisters (now that’s a stretch) with different goals on a school day in the Big Apple. Jane is headed to deliver a speech that could snag her a major college scholarship; Roxanne’s along for the ride to sneak backstage at a video shoot. The adventure includes cute boys, cute dogs and a wacky (and sort of cute) truant officer played by Eugene Levy. Just don’t call them the Olsen Twins.

An elderly man (James Garner) visits an aging woman (Gena Rowlands) in a nursing home and reads her a story of two young lovers, Noah (Ryan Gosling) and Allie (Rachel McAdams). After one short summer together, the young couple is separated for 14 years by World War II. Upon returning, Noah finds Allie engaged to be married. Bring the tissues—this one sounds like a real tearjerker. From the novel by Nicholas Sparks, and directed by Nick Cassavettes.

With direction from Garry Marshall (Pretty Woman, The Princess Diaries), the luminous Hudson may fulfill her potential for the first time since Almost Famous.

Starting their senior year at American Eagle Christian High School, “good girl” Mary (Jena Malone) and her Jesus-enthusiast best friend Hilary Faye (Mandy Moore) start to part ways when Mary’s faith falters and she makes some new friends: the new minister’s kid (Patrick Fugit), Hilary’s wheelchair-bound brother (Macaulay Culkin) and the school’s rebellious Jewish student Cassandra (Eva Amurri). The film’s mix of religious messages and teen angst could be hilariously spot-on, or only generically subversive.

Further proof that it’s a youth culture: the original was thoroughly insulted and dismissed by critics but adored by kids who don’t know any better. This time around the Scooby Gang must rescue the world from an onslaught of monsters. Tired of always screwing up, Shaggy and Scooby commit themselves to saving the day.

Shrek 2 (PG)
That lovable green ogre Shrek (voiced by Mike Myers) returns to the big screen in the sequel to the animated box office success. After his honeymoon with Fiona (Cameron Diaz), Shrek meets his in-laws, the king and queen of the Kingdom of Far, Far Away. The royals, shocked by their daughter’s hubby and his sidekick, a wisecracking donkey (Eddie Murphy), conspire to break up the newlyweds with the help of a sword-toting fairy tale cat Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas).

The Stepford Wives (PG-13)
Soon after moving to the town of Stepford, Joanna Eberhart (Nicole Kidman) senses there’s something strange about the women of this small suburb: They’re all smiling, perfect, husband-pleasing housewives. In other words, creepy. Her husband (Matthew Broderick) doesn’t seem to mind, but she finds a fellow investigator in Bobbie Markowitz (Bette Midler) and learns that all the husbands are replacing their wives with robots. Frank Oz directs this remake of the 1975 suspense thriller with an all-star cast (Christopher Walken, Glenn Close, Faith Hill, Jon Lovitz). It’s potentially a smartly comic update, but the rumors of ego clashes on the set may affect the final outcome.

Super Size Me (NR)
In this fascinating documentary, writer/director Morgan Spurlock eats nothing but McDonald’s for a month to show exactly what fast food is doing to our country’s health. Interviews with medical experts, advertising and marketing executives and the youth of American add up to a revealing, terrifying statement.

The Terminal (NR)
While en route to New York City, Viktor Navorski (Tom Hanks) finds his Eastern European homeland has fallen to a coup, and he is left stranded in JFK Airport. With a passport from a country that no longer exists and not allowed to actually enter the United States, Navorski lives in the confines of the airport terminal. In the meantime, Navorski finds love with flight attendant Amelia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) but also finds that he has overstayed his welcome with airport official Frank Dixon (Stanley Tucci).

While Jenna learns what it’s actually like to be an adult, she reconnects with her childhood friend Matt (Mark Ruffalo) and discovers the glories of grown-up love.

Hollywood delivers big action, big budget and a big wooden horse in this $200 million version of the Trojan War based on The Iliad. Prince of Troy Paris (Orlando Bloom) has an affair with Helen (Diane Kruger), the queen of Sparta, which tees off hubby King Menalaus (Brendan Gleeson). He and brother Agamemnon (Brian Cox), King of the Myceneans, raise a huge army and vow to bring Helen back. They also enlist Achilles (Brad Pitt), a warrior driven by lust for glory and power, to destroy Troy and its protector, the noble Prince Hector (Eric Bana).

Two tigers with polar-opposite personalities are separated soon after birth. One is forced to become a circus performer and the other becomes the companion of the governor’s son. Monster lore goes topsy-turvy in this creature feature rife with special effects. Hugh Jackman is Van Helsing, a monster killer sent to Transylvania to stake Count Dracula. He meets up with Anna Valerious (Kate Beckinsale), who wants the ancient vampire dead to break a family curse. Clad in stylish black, the two of them battle vamps, werewolves and even Frankenstein’s monster.

White Chicks (PG-13)
Two black F.B.I. agents (Marlon and Shawn Wayans) go undercover as—you guessed it—white chicks to guard and then ultimately rescue two New York hotel heiresses who get abducted by a serial kidnapper. Directed by the stars’ brother, co-writer and fellow In Living Color veteran Keenen Ivory Wayans.
