Jim Lauderdale
If his name seems unfamiliar, his work certainly isn't. In his 14-year career, Jim Lauderdale has penned songs for the Dixie Chicks, Kelly Willis, George Strait, Patty Loveless, Vince Gill, et al. The quintessential renaissance man of country insists on reanimating the music that once defined Nashville, rather than the Honkytown that Music City has become. He is the protagonist to Kenny Chesney's antagonist. You decide: Lauderdale's breakup lament, "Keep your heart and mind wide open/Hold on tight to what you find," or Chesney's mindless drivel, "She thinks my tractor's sexy/It really turns her on." And people wonder why the rest of the country thinks we roll around in the hay with our cousins. Lauderdale brings fine country songwriting full circle tomorrow night at Blue Cats. (Clint Casey)

Die Fledermaus
Johann Strauss' best-known operetta relates the humorous tale of a wife's affair, her lover's unwarranted arrest, her husband's unfaithful drunken flirtations and one Dr. Falke, who gets revenge on the practical joking husband. Shakespearean in its twists, the 130-year-old lark will be spoken in English and sung in German, featuring baritone Shon Sims as the husband Eisenstein and soprano Barbara Shirvis as his deceitful wife Rosalinda.
Frivolous and fun, Die Fledermaus is a pre-Valentine's treat for the senses. (Paige M. Travis)

Faces From Under The Bridge
Most of us have voyeuristic impulses, but we prefer to engage them from a distance. Homeless people are a perfect example. From inside our cars, we'll gawk. When they confront us, we might quickly toss some change into their hands or simply walk away. Often times, the homeless themselves don't see the people they panhandle from or the people that step over them on the street—blocking out the rest of the world is a way to preserve some dignity. Photographer David Habercom has been documenting Knoxville's street people. Last summer, he shot several portraits under the Jackson Avenue viaduct. Viewers will be able to gawk all they want at these photos—whether they feel fascination, shame, sympathy or empathy, well, that probably depends on the person. Habercom says he hopes the photographs humanize his subjects. "I hope they will help viewers make a personal contact with these faces that we otherwise bury beneath our fear and loathing." Habercom also has a series of photos he shot at the 5th Ave. Motel before it was condemned last year. (Joe Tarr)

Brilliant Traces
A hermit living in the remote wilderness of Alaska. A hysterical runaway bride from Arizona stranded in a snowstorm. These two characters and their attempts to understand themselves and each other is the basis of Brilliant Traces, a funny and moving two-character play presented by the Actors Co-op. The main characters seem tailor-made for Buddy Lucas and Jenny Ballard, actors who have matured greatly over just a few years on stage. Where Lucas' strength lies in his stoicism, and Ballard embodies the term "quirky," their best traits—and greatest challenge—reveal an underlying vulnerability. Zack Allen's familiarity with subtlety and humor as an actor should empower him in this turn in the director's seat. (P.M.T.)
