The Mercurial Odyssey of a Pool Shooter
Mike Massey was a teenage pool hustler around Knoxville in the 1960s. A Loudon product, he went on to become a legendary trick shot artist who's won national and international tournaments in most of the billiards disciplines. His career took some violent swings along the way, and he says it's his faith in God that brought him through. See him on ESPN, and read about him in Mike Gibson's account of his life in the green felt arena.

Citybeat
Mike Gibson finds Hardin Valleyans still girding to stop TDOT's Orange Route, and Clint Casey describes what city annexation and its frequent squabbles are all about.
Plus: Seven Days, Meet your City, and Knoxville Found.

Joe Sullivan says that a UT initiative to reexamine and perhaps eliminate its "marginal " programs and departments is worth pursuing in Insights, Barry Henderson pronounces the County Commission's dabbling in First Amendment religious matters both offensive and silly in Editor's Corner, Jack Neely reopens the mystery surrounding the first Greek immigrants to Knoxville in Secret History, Scott McNutt pursues privatization to its inevitable conclusion, and Steve Dupree calls for less talk and more action in the abortion debate.

Scoring a Perfect Orange
Don't call it a comeback, ska has been lurking underneath the radar for years. Knoxville's Perfect Orange contributes an energetic mix of horn-backed rock to the local scene.

The charming foursome from NYC, The Lascivious Biddies, get Leslie Wylie into the spirit of fun with their smart, swinging sounds, and Eye on the Scene finds the Pilot Light in expansion mode.

Paige M. Travis finds that the Tennessee Stage Company does justice to the timeless romantic comedy The Philadelphia Story.

Jonathan Frey learns more about Mormons than he ever expected by reading Jon Krakauer's Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith.

Urban Renewal by Matt Edens

Rationally Speaking by Massimo Pigliucci
