Fete Des Fous
Local art purveyors Chroma together with Head on the Wall Productions have concocted Fete Des Fous (Feast of Fools) as an amalgam of art, performance and festivity that's hard to imagine or describe, but it sounds like a Halloween party that may forever put other Halloween parties to shame.
The Fairbanks' new home in Homberg Place will host the party, which begins at 7 p.m. and continues until 6 a.m. Nov. 1. Early comers will find an exhibit containing art and photography by numerous local creative types. Cadre (Joey Mullinex and Mark Large, formerly of Pezz) will perform "left-wing love songs" at 8 p.m., followed by dance/music/spoken word by Glisten Carefully at 8:30 p.m.; Americana pop from Roundhouse at 9 p.m.; poetry and prose by David Bilbrey at 10 p.m.; and creepy Gothic tunes from Blackgrass at 10:30 p.m. DJs Zeo and Michael XI start spinning the dance tunes at midnight. There's a costume contest with prizes at 2:30 a.m. and then, for those who haven't crashed yet, a breakfast buffet at 3:30 a.m. You might have to sleep a few days in advance to gear up for all the revelry, but you can always pop in and out during the night. Depending on when you arrive and plan to leave, tickets are between $6 and $14.
Fete Des Fous is an ambitious undertaking that may raise the bar on all holiday blow-outs. I don't know who they're calling fous, but don't take it personallyjust have a good time. (Paige M. Travis)

KFAR Benefit Halloween Dance Party
Metro Pulse has long been a champion of unique, local radio. This pirate radio stationwhich broadcasts at 90.9 FMhas been on the air for more than a year. And while it's still wildly uneven, the station continues to show promise and improve. You can hear a lot of music and commentary on the station that you'd never hear anywhere else. KFARor Knoxville First Amendment Radiohas recently beefed up its morning air time with a number of leftist news programs and commentary which give a balance to conservative AM talk radio. Musically, the station is a mixed bag, with all manner of genres blended to good or bad effect. But it was really the first radio station in Knoxville to give significant air time for hip-hop. So it makes sense that this Halloween fundraiser for the station is going to be a hip-hop dance party blast. The cost is $5, but if you pay $10 you're guaranteed to get a door prize, with donations coming from the Tomato Head, McKay's Books, and Disc Exchange. (Joe Tarr)
KFAR BENEFIT HALLOWEEN DANCE PARTY * DJ JAHSON & THE ILLICIT SOUND SYSTEM, SOLID EARTH * FRIDAY, OCT. 31, 9 P.M. * BARLEY'S UPSTAIRS LOFT * $5 GENERAL ADMISSION, $10 VIP PASS
History for the Holidays: Meet the Authors
Authors aren't always as interesting as their books, but it sure is compelling to see the face behind the words. Sharyn McCrumb, author of numerous bestselling novels, will be the featured speaker at the East Tennessee Historical Society's annual History for the Holidays: Meet the Authors Day. She'll read from and lecture on her latest novel, Ghost Riders, a novel of Appalachia during the Civil War.
The event's special guest is state historian Walter T. Durham, who took over from Wilma Dykeman in 2002 and is the author of several books on Tennessee history. Several authors of local and regional acclaim will fill out the rest of the event, including Cameron Judd, Fred Brown, Allen R. Coggins, Stephen Ash, Jeanne McDonald and Metro Pulse's Jack Neely.
The event is free to attend, but don't plan to leave empty-handed. Books, especially those by our bevy of talented regional authors, make great presents. (P.M.T.)
HISTORY FOR THE HOLIDAYS: MEET THE AUTHORS DAY WITH SHARYN MCCRUMB * SUNDAY, NOV. 2, 1-5 P.M. (MCCRUMB SPEAKS AT 2 P.M.) * PARK HOUSE (CORNER OF WALNUT AND CUMBERLAND) * FREE.
