Beki Hemingway with the Lost Dogs
If the bevy of musicians who already call Knoxville home isn't enough proof that our city is accommodating to those who write songs and play instruments, consider this: With two CDs under her belt, established and lauded Chicago musician Beki Hemingway, with her guitarist/co-writer husband Randy Kerkman, recently moved to Knoxville. And not because she likes a large choice of fast food restaurants. "The Southeast has always been a favorite area of the country to tour," Hemingway says, "and Knoxville audiences have always been good to us." She played her first show as a local artist at Border's Cafe in May. Hemingway's music falls in a category with Kim Richey and Lucinda Williams: strong women with soulful voices and a good helping of guitar. Somebody should take her some Krispy Kreme doughnuts when she plays the New City Cafe this Friday, just to make her feel welcome. (Paige M. Travis)
BEKI HEMINGWAY WITH THE LOST DOGS * FRIDAY, JUNE 20, 8:30P.M. * NEW CITY CAFE * $10.

Superdrag with the Put Outs
Sad to say, this may be your last chance to see one of the most significant and successful—not to mention emotionally direct, viscerally exciting, and melodically memorable—bands in Knoxville history. At least for some time to come. With bassist Sam Powers retiring from music and remaining members Don Coffey, Mic Harrison, and John Davis all married or on the verge thereof, Superdrag is going on hiatus for the foreseeable future. Davis and Harrison may have solo records forthcoming; Coffey is working at the local Studio 613.
Theirs has been a career of highlights, some high profile, some of them less visible but equally memorable. From headlining countless beery Fort Sanders yard parties to a ubiquitous video buzz clip, from their hellbent detonation of an MTV studio during an on-air performance to sharing bills with the likes of Alex Chilton and GBV, the band members lived out most of their rock 'n' roll dreams, if not always in the way or according to the schedule they might have planned.
The boys say they'll be playing again—Some Day. But if they never take another stage together, they'll be leaving behind a body of work worthy of even the alterna-rock greats—Big Star, Teenage Fanclub, et al.—that inspired them, five full-length albums and one EP of lustrous power-pop, wistful balladry, a bit of Beatles-esque experimentation, and plenty of roof-raising, balls-out Rawk. So show 'em love, and plenty of it, and maybe, just maybe, Some Day will be sooner than we think.(Mike Gibson)
SUPERDRAG WITH THE PUT OUTS * FRIDAY, JUNE 20, 9 P.M. * BLUE CATS * $10 ADVANCE, $12 DOOR
