Scott Miller & the Commonwealth CD Release Show
When I first saw Scott Miller, upstairs at Hawkeye's in 1990 or '91, he was a whisker-thin slip of a fellow, strumming an acoustic guitar and yodeling about sympathizing with serial killers and mocking Muffys with bows in their hair. To hear him performing such calculated-to-shock creations there and then seemed perfectly natural, and at the time the skinny kid seemed comfortable in his role as jester provocateur. These days, the artist eschews such savagely satirical songs, some times referring to them as sophomoric, and preferring to employ his sardonic wit in more subtle and sophisticated tunes. Such a maturation of talent is only natural, and his fans, new and old, seem to readily embrace each ensuing incarnation of the singer-songwriter.
Miller says that developing songs for Upside Downside, his latest CD, was the first time he had to consciously sit down and write material for an album. Maybe so, but the result, as always, seems effortless and unforced, the new tunes on the CD residing unostentatiously beside two old favorites, "Amtrak Crescent" and "Ciderville Saturday Night." Chances are, in performance, he will blend the new material with selections from his last solo CD and a song or two from his V-roys days with an apparent unstudied easean ease that conceals all the hard work that led up to that moment. By the Rivers of Babylon
Americans are often accused of being ignorant, racist, uncultured slobs. Give us a six-pack of Budweiser, a pizza, television (showing some scantily-clad women), ample parking and a war every now and then, and we're pretty much content. Or so the stereotype goes. While there are certainly those among us who would fit that description, it's hardly definitive. As a culture of immigrants, we've always been a society struggling against itself, always redefining itself. There are plenty of xenophobes around, but they are no more "American" than the immigrants they despise. At any rate, Knoxville's been pretty kind to its Middle Eastern and Muslim residents ever since the war on terror took over. To celebrate what a great place Knoxville can be and enjoy some great culture, check out By the Rivers of Babylon, A Celebration of Cultures in a Time of Turmoil, held at Sacred Heart Complex, 721 Northshore Drive. Enjoy great food, films, stories, children's activities and music from Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine, and other areas where so much of the war on terror is being fought. (Joe Tarr)
