Knoxville at Night Benefit
You can't really go wrong with this one-night music festival, which hopefully will become an annual event. For the low price of $5, you can get into six bars and two coffeeshops (all within quick walking distance of each other) and pick from more than 20 bands to listen to. The festival will help pay for the medical bills of the man who was savagely attacked and beaten in March. Even if it weren't for a good cause, the ticket price would be hard to beat.
Another great reason to attend is that the festival is bringing Dixie Dirt out of sabbatical—the group is the only one to perform two sets, an early one at Barley's and a closing set at Preservation Pub. There are too many groups playing to mention them all. But others lined up include Leslie Woods & Dark Mountain Orchid at Preservation Pub, Casey Jones and Jodi Manross plus the Natti Love Joys at Blue Cats, Superfly Soundtrip at Barley's, Old-Time String Band at Java, jazz at Cup-a-Joe Old City, and the Pink Sexies and the Immortal Lee County Killers at the Pilot Light. A drum circle with Circle Modern Dance at 8 p.m. starts the show off in the Blue Cats courtyard.
Cooperative efforts like these are exactly what the Old City needs. Make sure you support this event so that more of them will happen. (Joe Tarr)

Cynthia Dall
A member of Smog, Cynthia Dall's most recent album, sound restores Young men, is a collection of eerie, somewhat chilly compositions. Her voice is beautiful, but detached and melancholy. She uses a variety of accompaniments and arrangements to frame that voice in novel ways—over a piano, with electronics or fuzzy guitars. You could call it "haunting" music and although that sounds like a cliché, it's also clearly her intent. "I played with boys" starts out with a delicate piano line that echoes like it was played in some cold, damp church. But then her bandmates creep in with guitar and drums to sweep the thing away. (Joe Tarr)
CYNTHIA DALL * SUNDAY, MAY 11 * 9 P.M. * THE PILOT LIGHT * $5

Opera Singers Unite for Hunger
Perhaps you were looking for a worthy way to pass a Tuesday night. Perhaps opera is your passion. Or, perhaps, like me, you were simply looking for an excuse to say Die Fledermaus. Regardless of the reason, the UT music school has an event that just might meet your needs. On May 13, a passel of musicians—including Daniel Berry, Carroll Freeman, and members of the Knoxville Opera Studio—will take the stage to raise money for "Save a Family Plan," an internationally-known non-profit that raises funds to help those without adequate housing, health care, and resources. Scenes from La Traviata, The Mikado, Marriage of Figaro, Carmen, and, yes, Die Fledermaus will be on the program, admission is free, and the hat will be passed at intermission. (Adrienne Martini)
