Tapestry Storytelling Performance
With a war raging in the Middle East that threatens to further divide a world already too divisive, hearing about a program like this just might keep hope for a better future alive. Professional Storytellers Audrey Galex and B.J. Abraham will present "Tapestry," an Arab and Jewish storytelling performance that weaves together stories, poetry and songs as a step towards peace.
Abraham grew up a Lebanese Christian in the Mississippi Delta. She brings into her stories many of the accents and characters with which she grew up. Galex grew up along the Mississippi River in Illinois, immersed in stories of her Jewish heritage. She has lived and studied in Egypt and Israel. Following a resurgence of violence between the Palestinians and Israelis, in February 2001 the two decided to create a tandem story that would provide a model for listening and peaceful coexistence, taking the stage in traditional dress from their respective cultures and addressing universal themes of fear, mistrust, and hope.
Local Jewish, Palestinian, Arabian, and Christian organizations, among several others, support the program. That's a good sign. With examples like this, why can't we all just get along? (Scott McNutt)

The Circulatory System
This five-piece band from Athens, Ga., features three members of the Olivia Tremor Control. Like other bands in the Elephant 6 collective, the Circulatory System (led by W. Cullen Hart) is inspired by the lush pop of the mid- to late-'60s, a la the Beach Boys, the Beatles, the Byrds, et al. But it's all refashioned with an indie sensibility. The opening song on last fall's self-titled LP, Yesterday's World sounds like it could have been on Magical Mystery Tour. But the sound is swiped with a sense of irony, as Hart sings, "yesterday's world feels just so far away from these days.... Here we go back in time to bring these days." Listening to them in the Pilot Light, it won't feel like it's 1968 but that's probably just as well. You also might want to buy one of their CDs for Hart's artwork alone. (Joe Tarr)

The River's Birthday Bash
Ah, the Terrible Twos. Soon, Knoxville's world class rock station will enter the next phase of its childhood, where it learns how to exert its will on an unsuspecting city. But first, a celebration is in order. Knoxville's own Scott Millera rocker who is equal parts Roger Miller, Bruce Springsteen, and, ahem, Neil Diamondwill kick off the shin-dig with an acoustic set, which promises to be chock-full of cuts from his upcoming new album as well as the favorites you've come to know and love. Headlining will be Robert Bradley's Blackwater Surprise, whose blues-y, high-energy rock will surely knock your boogie shoes off. And this tasty little nugget of fun comes to you free of charge, with free T-shirts for the first 500 or so partiers. Plus, there'll be cake! (Adrienne Martini)
