Charlie Kaufman, the writer of Adaptation read the autobio of somewhat loopy former game show host Chuck Barris (The Dating Game, The Newlywed Game, The Gong Show), who claims to have interspersed his TV gigs with hits for the CIA. Then Kaufman took the kook at his word. Sam Rockwell plays Barris; Drew Barrymore, George Clooney and Julia Roberts also star.

Three guys, tired of their meddling sister (Gabrielle Union) nosing into their respective relationships, hire a penniless playboy (LL Cool J) to give her some romance of her own. From 2001, an Algerian-French-German co-production of a story about a Senegalese tour guide at a historical site from which slaves were taken to America. To track his own family history, he heads across the Atlantic to America, eventually landing in New York City.

The wait is over for Book Two, which will present more of the same (hobbits, orcs, yada yada) and some new stuff (tree beings called ents, lots more screen time for a remarkably life-like CGI Gollum).

Maid in Manhattan (PG-13)
New York hotel housekeeper Jennifer Lopez just happens to be trying on a wealthy guest's clothes when a handsome politician (Ralph Fiennes) walks in on her (no, he doesn't catch any skin). An elaborate ruse must then be produced to further the illusion, by which we mean Royal Shakespeare Company alum Fiennes must somehow pass for Richard Gere.

In this 1998 film, Max (Jason Schwartzman) is a brilliant but erratic 10th-grader who fails classes but excels at organizing extracurricular activities at Rushmore, a private school. Unfortunately for Max, Blume is also hot for teacher; the two compete for her affections while trying to sabotage the other's wooing efforts.
