Medieval Twelfth Night Festival
Just not quite ready to let go the Christmas spirit yet? Then mark the end of the Twelve Days of Christmas by attending a medieval twelfth night festival, which is observed Jan. 5 and celebrates the arrival of the Three Kings at the birthplace of Christ. (Quick trivia question: What were the names of the Three Kings?) The festival includes readings and carols and features a concert by former Halls High School madrigal singers and the Messiah Lutheran Church choir. (Trivia answer: The Three Kings, also known as the Wise Men or the Magi, were: Caspar, King of Tarsus, the Land of Myrrh; Melchior, King of Arabia, the Land of Gold; and Balthasar, King of Saba, the land of Frankincense.) (Scott McNutt)

KMA Director's Talk and Reception
Getcher Sunday best on, come out to the Knoxville Museum of Art, meet its new director, Todd D. Smith, mingle with other art connoisseurs, and then hear Smith's lecture on "Elliott Daingerfield and American Art at the Turn of the Twentieth Century." (You might even see the Metro Pulse publisher there.) Daingerfield is considered one of the South's most important artists, especially known for his symbolist imagery, a style that blended mysticism and realism. Smith, on the other hand, has been president of The Plains Art Museum in Fargo, N.D., curator of American Art at the Mint Museum in Charlotte, N.C., and curator of American and Decorative Arts at the Dayton Art Institute in Ohio. Come on out and decide whether he knows his stuff. (Scott McNutt)
KMA DIRECTOR'S TALK AND RECEPTION * FRIDAY, JANUARY 3 * RECEPTION 5 P.M., LECTURE 6 P.M. * KNOXVILLE MUSEUM OF ART * FREE * 525-6101 FOR INFO
Born With a Tail, Fifth Year Senior and Huffstetler
Early January tends to be a dry time for shows as bands, music lovers, club owners and drunks try to recover from the holidays and muster some strength to make it through winter. So frankly, there are not a lot of big shows going on this week. But, that doesn't mean nothing is happening. This show at Old City Java is one that could be a sleeper. Born With A Tail dips its toe into both math rock and hardcore but never really jumps all the way into either genre. Fronted by brothers Jared and Justin Brown, this four-piece creates fiercely guitar driven rock, with lines that are at turns elegant and chaotic. Their second full-length, The Gravest Suspicion, is full of piss and vinegar and this show might be the perfect way to curse off another cruel January. (Joe Tarr)
