Rand, a University of Georgia journalism graduate, co-founded Metro Pulse in 1991 with Ashley Capps, Ian Blackburn, and Margaret Weston. A musician and veteran rock climber, Rand often makes airline reservations under the name "Sonny Ho-Ham Junior Joy".
