Knoxville at Night

The Knoxville at Night festival held in the Old City on June 2 wasn’t as successful as last year’s event, perhaps due to heavy rains and an area tornado watch, but it still had a respectable showing. About 1,000 people came out to the several participating nightclubs and a coffee shop. A $5 cover charge got you in to see more than 20 local bands; it was impossible to see all of them, so you had to pick your favorites. Jack Rentfro, editor of the exhaustive Cumberland Avenue Revisited, was seen bouncing from club to club, muttering about the futility of the task but thrilled to have the chance to catch so much music. He raved about much of what he saw, particularly the Rockwells. The event raised about $5,000, half of what it brought in last year. Proceeds went to the Knoxville Firefighters Association Fire Safety Awareness and Children’s Burn Victim programs. The organizer, Lenore Kinder who works at Blue Cats, was disappointed by the lower turnout but vowed to put the event on again next year. “All in all, the artists had a great time, and everybody who attended was nothing but smiles,” she says. “I look at it as a success. I’m a little disappointed with Knoxville with the turnout. But it’s not going to deter me from doing it again.”

Let’s hope it doesn’t. It’s a great event that showcases the wonderful musical talent and nightclubs Knoxville has to offer. Hopefully it’ll catch on.

Revisiting Revisited

Speaking of Cumberland Avenue Revisited, Rentfro will be “reading and second guessing [himself]” from the book at the Lawson-McGhee Library on Thursday, June 17, from 6 to 7 p.m. Jim Myers will provide musical accompaniment on a variety of stringed instruments. Rentfro gave this hard-to-resist pitch: “Come! See! One Night Only! Buy One Drink and See the Whole Show! Slave girls! Hot spurs! Buckets o’ Blood! Dogs on Trampolines! Not Responsible for Accidents!” The reading/musical event takes place in the plaza behind the library.

Rain Out

The Music in the Park concert series at Ijams Nature Center has been cancelled after last Saturday’s show—featuring Blue Mother Tupelo and Solace—was rained out and lost money. Dave Landeo and Kevin Fox Band were scheduled to play on July 17, but the show has been canceled. It was the third concert at Ijams this summer. Hopefully, the Ijams folks will be able to regroup and put on some more cool events.

Go.

Thursday: Rock out with the Los Lonely Boys for free in Market Square. Then head to Barley’s and rock out with Dixie Dirt, one of Knoxville’s best bands.

Friday: Get an early start on the weekend with the local Americana group Blue Mother Tupelo at the KMA during Alive After Five. Later, head to the Pilot Light and hear another one of Knoxville’s best bands, the High Score.

Saturday: Dance to some Irish tunes by Bohola at the Laurel Theater.

Sunday: Get in touch with your inner Goth (he’s in such pain!) at Blue Cats’ Sanctus.

Monday: He was afraid that when she got to really know him, his whole dark side and everything, that she wouldn’t love him anymore. And that’s where faith comes in because you’ve got to say that even though I’m afraid this person is going to hurt me, I’m afraid I’m going to get rejected, I’m going to make a leap of faith and love this person. But he couldn’t do that.

Tuesday: Check out Brandy Robinson, a recent Knoxville expatriate, at the Downtown Grill & Brewery.

Wednesday: Sevan Takvoryan Trio at Preservation Pub.
