We (heart) DIY

Having ourselves been "rescued" by the DIY network, we read with interest and confusion Adrienne Martini's article "DIY Invasion." Our renovation experience was far different from that of Ms. Martini. Everyone from Senior Executive Producer Daniel Schwartz to project contractor Jim Brunton were extremely focused and worked hard to ensure both a quality TV show and a quality renovation. We haven't seen the former, but can say without equivocation that the latter has changed our family's life. And no, the dozen extra people who were essential to insuring each success did not get on our nerves. In fact, they performed their jobs with sensitivity and good humor and made the whole thing a hell of a lot of fun. Yeah, there were some messes created in the process, but what renovation does not make one?

Unlike Ms. Martini we continue to be grateful for the experience, and our newly renovated kitchen. We would do it again in a heartbeat! Thanks, DIY!

'List' to the Right

I really start to wonder about the intelligence of Mr. [Brian] Conley and the integrity of the Metro Pulse when you guys can't provide an accurate list of the Knoxville City Council candidates running in the At-Large Seat B race. Get it right—there are three candidates vying for the seat. Norris Dryer, Jean Teague and Chris Woodhull.

As for Mr. Conley's arguments in favor of his "preferred" candidates, I can only say, "lightweight" (as to his arguments) and "right leaning" (as to his choice of candidates). To save everyone's time, he should have stated that he is Republican and that he endorses the "Haslam" slate. Better yet, he should just stay out of the endorsement business.

Mr. Conley is very ably turning the Metro Pulse into a very ordinary, run of the mill partisan paper. Gone are the days of subtlety and balance. I suppose Mr. Conley's next step will be to ask FOX News about borrowing their "Fair and balanced" slogan. Perhaps he sincerely believes that he can snub at least half of the Metro Pulse readership because they no longer have an alternative paper to turn to. Perhaps he hopes to gain something if the right folks win the election....

Unfortunately, Metro Pulse, you have forced me to say goodbye. Even though you still have some excellent writers, I cannot support the direction that you're headed in. I will be sure and tell my friends of my decision, just as your publisher, Mr. Conley, was sure to let Knoxville know about his personal preferences for the upcoming election.

List Them All

I am a native Knoxvillian, living in Nashville, and a long time reader of Metro Pulse. I have always considered the Pulse a credible source of information on life in Knoxville. However, I was shocked at the grievous errors of omission in your [Sept. 11] article endorsing a candidate for City Council [At-Large] Seat B. Two candidates, Alonzo Montgomery and Norris Dryer, are not even mentioned as candidates. How can such a mistake occur?

I believe you owe both candidates and more importantly the citizens of Knoxville an explanation. Unfortunately the damage has already been done to both the candidates, your readers, and your reputation. It appears you are left with a Hobson's choice. The omission was intentional or it was very bad journalism. Neither one is excusable.
