The Enslaved Slavs

I need to make a brief comment on the "Color Conscious" article by Attica Scott in the December 19, 2002 Metro Pulse.

In the column, Ms. Scott says that she is "not aware of the European slave trade and how whites were placed in shackles and chains."

The author of that article seems to be too self-absorbed to bother to read European history and consider the Slavic people. The Slavs are a European people with a history of being enslaved. As to what two other European cultures enslaved the Slavs, I'll leave that as an exercise for the self-absorbed. The Slavic history of slavery is the origin of the word "Slav."

If Attica would be less infatuated with the myth that only blacks were slaves, perhaps by being less ignorant of history, maybe such a faux pas wouldn't have been made.

Yes, I am of Slavic descent.

Goodbye, cruel Pulse!

I'll never again look at Metro Pulse after reading the racist anti-white article I read today [Color Conscious, Dec. 19].

The author seems to be dwelling on the past more than focusing on the future. I didn't see even one suggestion in her article of what might be done to lessen the racism that still exists.

This article was terribly one-sided and completely ignored the fact that there is just as much racism on both sides of the fence. From her article, I'm led to believe that instead of trying to fight racism, she's determined to create more racial tension. Even though it's an editorial, people still relate what they read in a paper to the paper itself. Is this sort of thing that you want to come to mind when someone thinks of Metro Pulse?

Anti-racism is a two-way street and should be dealt with as such. Publishing hateful rhetoric like that will only cause more racial tension, and will never be a useful tool in fighting racism.
