Letters to the Editor

To Be, or Not, etc.,

Jesse Mayshark's editorial column on June 21 quotes city Director of Development Leslie Henderson as saying she does not advocate people living on the upper floors of Market Square buildings. Yet, in the mayor's downtown recommendations address of May 31, Mayor Ashe recommends "For the Market Square area, KCDC will issue a request for proposals to establish a retail, entertainment and residential Town Center on Market Square." Ms. Henderson's and Mr. Ashe's statements seem to conflict. So, can anyone tell me exactly where the residential component of Mayor Ashe's recommended Market Square Town Center will go, if not on the upper floors? As a current person living on the upper floor of a Market Square building, I would certainly like to know.

Full of Grace-lessness

Whatever some confused catechist might have told music reviewer Kurt Hernon (Platters, May 17), there is no official Roman Catholic doctrine called "transmogrification."

The word "transmogrification" usually connotes a change into something strange or grotesque. The Oxford English Dictionary indicates its usage to be "vulgar or humorous," and Webster's New World Dictionary describes it etymologically as of "humorous pseudo-Latin formation."

Mr. Hernon was obviously thinking of the doctrine of transubstantiation. Perhaps somewhere on the way from his brain to the page the word itself was transmogrified.

That'll be 10 bloody Marys and 10 how's your fathers.

Below Deck

I saw the picture of Bob Deck and his daughter in the Tomato Head ad [in Metro Pulse] and thought, "Gee—Whatever happened to Bob?" I saw him again, having lunch at Crescent Moon with none other than Victor Ashe—so, now I figure it's providence...I just have to ask, what's up Bob? I would write you directly, but there's no listing for you. I figured you probably read MP, so here goes: Why aren't you on TV anymore? Your show rocked. It was easily the best show that's ever been on local TV.

I think you'd make a great political commentator. I was a faithful watcher when you were on WBIR. You were always witty and incredibly informed, or at least gave that impression to viewers. Who do I need to write to get you back on the air? Or who can I call?

One last question, who picked up the tab at Crescent Moon?

We asked Deck to account for himself, after he swore he had no relatives named Walker. Why is he not in TV? "Beats me," he said. "Ask the TV people." Who paid for lunch? "I did." Of course—The Editor.
