Knoxville's been home to a surprising number of professional cartoonists
 by Coury Turczyn
Cartooning is one of the toughest gigs in the world to succeed at. Every year, thousands of would-be cartoonists submit their work to media syndicates, hoping to create the next Dilbert or Calvin and Hobbes...
...But only a handful are selected for syndication, and of those only a few will get picked up by enough newspapers to build any sort of popularity. It may seem like a dream job, but cartooning is a really frustrating way to make a living.
Amazingly enough, though, Knoxville has been the spawning ground for a large number of nationally-known cartoonists, from comic book artists like Bruce Bogle of Tiger Wraith fame to editorial cartoonists such as Ed Gamble at The Florida Times-Union. Here are the stories of four illustrators who once called Knoxville home, and one who still does.
