Amazing Grace

Traditional gospel music has a strong history in Knoxville, but like all good things, gospel is changing with the times. While the choir and piano are giving way to pop-style singers and nouveau country combos, some of Knoxville's gospel cornerstones explain to Chris Barrett what lies ahead.

Patent Pending

Mike Gibson introduces one of the few species in East Tennessee that's not endangered: the fanatical inventor. From high-tech to low-tech, rubber band-powered to solar-powered, some of the finest labor saving and decision-making widgets that the world currently enjoys started in Knoxville workshops, labs, and garages. Here's a peek at the people and what they currently have on the drawing boards.

Volume 6, Number 47: November 21 - November 27, 1996

Hunger Strikes

While the appearance of the underfed, undernourished Knoxvillian remains a far cry from the vintage news file photos of "Third World" Appalachia, all swollen tummies and sunken eyes, there is an ever-increasing number of hungry people in our community. Katie Allison Granju introduces some neighbors who either barely or don't subsist on assistance programs like food stamps, and asks some area program administrators what the needy and the rest of us have to look forward to.

Volume 6, Number 48: November 27 - December 5, 1996

While interviewing debtors, attorneys, and personal finance experts, Val Pendergrast finds that job loss, susceptibility to credit advertising, and "keeping up with the Joneses" all play a part in East Tennessee's ongoing bankruptcy epidemic.
